Over SXSW I found a new place I like even better than my previous scouted location to do a time lapse from. This is a shot of Downtown Austin, TX from Lou Neff Point in Zilker Park. Time Lapse coming soon...!
I ordered an intervalometer remote so I don't have to use my laptop but of course it didn't work when I got it so I need to ship it back to China. Yes China, because I ordered a knock of brand for less than $20 instead of the $136 for the canon brand. I guess that's a lesson in you get what you pay for but in all honesty in interval timer is not the most sophisticated of technology so I think in this case I was just unlucky. There are a ton of these knock off versions that look identical to canons version (minus the logo) and little complaints about them. It seemed worth the risk, especially if I get a working one eventually!

I spent the better part of the day Saturday scouting for a good shot of the Downtown Austin skyline for a good time lapse video. One of the places I checked out was a location I have shot before around the Lamar Bridge by the Austin Power Station. Here's a shot I took back in the summer of 2007:
Here's what things look like in 2012!:
It's really amazing how much Austin has grown in the last few years! I know that time period was over five years but the transformation actually took less than three; from 2008-11 I believe. Also, you can't even see all the new buildings from this angle about a dozen all together
Anyway, here's the shot I was looking for (not exactly but I settled for this):
Capital FAIL!

After spending a good part of the day scouting Saturday and finding the perfect location the actual filming on Sunday went about as wrong as possible! First off, the weather was bad and when I say "bad" for most people it was good but there was not a cloud in the sky which makes time lapse much less interesting. Then upon going to the location I realized, guess what, it's Kite Day!
(picture not by me... or from this year)
Seriously? Could my timing be any worse? The crowd, while not ideal, I could have delt with. However, kites in the sky for a time lapse? The only thing that could be worse is Sky Diving Day! So, I called that off and to not have a wasted day my friend Mitch and I decide to head off to the Capital grounds and maybe do something there as an unplanned "Plan B". Unfortunately, the misfortune didn’t stop there. Right at the point of the day to night transition (only the best and most interesting part) the battery in my camera died and then the software crashed and I had to restart my laptop twice. I lost a mumber of critical shots in that time and that's why it gets all "jumpy" at the end. Oh well... a few lessons learned but at least the first couple of seconds were OK I guess.
This is completely raw, unedited footage which I usually would never post but since it was all messed up anyway, why not! Funny how the Ice Melt TEST went flawless!

This is my first attempt at a time lapse with my 30D. I really wanted to do a sunset shot off my balcony or something more interesting but my internet connection was causing me problems and by the time I had the proper EOS Utility software needed working on my laptop the sun had long gone down. At that point the only thing I could think of to do was ice freezing but I didn't want to put my camera in the freezer so I settled for ice melting. I do wish it would have melted all the way to water but I set it up to do a shot every 30 secs for 2 hours and this is as far as it got and since it was just a test didn't bother running it out longer.
Here was the set up.... pretty simple:
